I've got soul but I'm not a soldier...

Hello everyone This one should be quite long, as I have not written for a while and a lot has happened since my last post, as you may have heard on the news – unless you were hibernating or you are just plain sh*t. Everything started on Tuesday 25 January. While the first protests were occurring in the streets of Cairo, my flatmate (Isabelle)’s family turned up, as they were meant to come and visit for a couple of weeks. You’re probably thinking “what a crap time for a holiday in Egypt” but they had planned it back in September and... [Lire la suite]

Just don't let the good life pass you by...

Hey ! First of all, a very happy new year to you all! I hope you had a great time over the holidays. Ok, I haven’t written for ages but my life was rather dull at the end of last year… After my funky trip to the Western Desert, I only spent another weekend away to the White Desert and the Black Desert, and that was about it. For those of you who might wonder, these deserts have such names because they are made of white and black rocks, it’s quite impressive. Here are some pictures:         The... [Lire la suite]

Without you I'm nothing...

Ok, today I was on a mission - yes, another one! I really wanted to clean my flat in order to settle in properly and really feel at home. I went to the local market and bought lots of cleaning products. By twelve, there I was, scrubbing and washing. I even did my very first laundry - with my beautiful 1975 washing machine, which, by the way, shakes a lot! Nowadays, it wouldn't pass the health and safety tests, for sure. Anyway, the amazing thing was that my clothes were dry after only an hour hanging outside my window... Wow, compared... [Lire la suite]

Walk like an Egyptian...

Yes! Score! Yesterday, two - yes, TWO! - Egyptians came to me in the street and asked for directions in Arabic. Can you believe it?! I'm definitely part of this city, I look like one of them! So cool!... Well, maybe not... It might keep me safe from tourist scams though... How cynical of me! Yesterday was a good day, kind of. I didn't see Mahmoud (Aww, shame...) but I went to the British Council where - after yet another hour waiting - I was told it would take at least two weeks to get my PGCE certificate stamped...!?!?!? What do they... [Lire la suite]

Why does it always rain on me?...

Ok, I just want to cry right now! Mahmoud called me this morning (Aww, I knew he couldn't stay away for long!) and asked whether I had signed the contract for the flat I saw last night and whether I had paid the deposit. Which I both did. He then told me I shouldn't have, as he's the one arranging the contracts for foreigners and Hassan - this big fat crook! - has made me sign an Egyptian contract, which is not the same apparently, as there are some clauses which are unfair to us, poor foreigners lost in Cairo. Oh thanks for... [Lire la suite]

Where do broken hearts go?...

Today was a very busy day... No, I didn't spend the day in the toilet, and yes, I'm feeling much better, thanks for asking! I guess my body got used to tap water and street food, yeah! We'll have to see about strangers in bars now!... Anyway, it all started with a phone call from Mahmoud (Aww) who asked me to meet him at the hotel reception at 9.30am and only turned up at 11am! Yes, I know what you're thinking, but actually if you were living in Cairo you'd find it pretty normal. Egyptians are so slow and laid back about time. Once... [Lire la suite]

And I would run away...

Today I woke up with an urge to go to the loo and thought "Shit! - (what an unfortunate thing to say!) - I've been here for 36h and already have the runs... Great!" I checked online and I didn't seem to have the symptoms of the "turista", but I wasn't impressed... Ok, maybe I shouldn't have drunk from the bathroom tap, maybe I shouldn't have eaten roasted seeds from a street stall, maybe I shouldn't have slept with a stranger from the local joint... Ok, the last bit is a lie! Anyway, I spent the morning juggling... [Lire la suite]

First I was afraid, I was petrified...

Today, I was on a mission, or rather the school sent me on a mission: finding a flat! (What?! I've litterally just turned up in this country!). In order to help me out, they provided me with a lovely guy (Mahmoud) whose job remains a bit obscure... Are you just a guy helping people to find places to live?! Surely part of my rent will end up in your pocket, you gigolo! Anyway, I viewed 12 flats. Key words: big... err... big... and... big! I swear, Cairo is not single-friendly! All the flats have minimum 2 bedrooms and a living room... [Lire la suite]
