And it feels like I'm seventeen again...

Ok, I have been pretty lazy lately, I haven’t written here for ages. Sorry about this. I have found that in this country you tend to have mood swings every other day. Sometimes you just feel you are having the time of your life, and sometimes the only thing you want to do is take the first plane to Europe (aka the land of sanity). Two weeks ago, I got some kind of eye infection: I woke up one morning and I looked like someone who had smoked far too much weed. I went to the ophthalmologist, he gave me eye drops and I was requested... [Lire la suite]

Let's get physical...

Last Monday evening, I went to a spinning class with Isabelle and Mario, as I had not exercised since I arrived in Cairo and started to feel my belly touching my toes. At the time it sounded like a great idea. I don't know if anyone here has ever attended a spinning class, but my, it's killing! No, it's not about spinning around until you drop dizzy... it's about working out while cycling! Basically, you have to picture 20 to 30 odd people in a room, all cycling their fat away on exercise bikes, while an instructor asks them to stand... [Lire la suite]

Boys, boys, boys...

For once, I'm not going to talk about me, but about some of my female colleagues, who have had the most peculiar experiences since they arrived in Cairo. You remember when I said in a previous post that Egyptian men are just frustrated and desperate for sex? Well, here are some - funny? - stories... Danielle was walking in the street to do some shopping, when a young boy - she reckons he was around 14 - came along and unexpectedly touched her boobs...!? And then went away... leaving her shocked. You remember Isabelle's cabbie,... [Lire la suite]

Sweet dreams are made of this...

Last weekend has been quite nice: on Friday, Marie-Eve, Mario and I went to a hotel for a bit of sunbathing around a pool. Oh yes, you might wonder why the hell we went to a hotel for this... Well, just because in Cairo, there’s no such thing as a local swimming pool. You either have to join a gym - which I’ll probably end up doing once I get my first salary; I actually saw one near my flat with a rooftop swimming pool, how cool is that?! - or you just have  to go to a hotel and pay a fee if you want to bathe around and get a... It's Oh so quiet...

The last days have been very quiet, as I've been attending inset days at my new school... Well, looking back at all the adventures I had, I guess this is not a bad thing that my life's not as eventful at the moment. I'm really scared about this school year, as I'll be teaching subjects I've never taught before and I don't know my students yet. It's all very stressful, but people seem to be quite supportive. We'll see... As there's nothing new in my life, I'm just going to post some pics from last weekend, when I explored Cairo with... [Lire la suite]

Come fill my little world, right up...

Today I woke up, went to the bathroom, turned the tap on and... no water! I ran to the kitchen, same deal! I randomly first thought I was lucky enough to have a lanlord who just didn't find it a good idea to pay for the water while the flat was vacant... Don't ask me why, I just did. Anyway, I was almost in tears - Have you noticed how easily I cry lately?! What's wrong with me?! - as I was remembering all the horrible things which happened to me over the last week... And then I thought enough was enough, I decided to go along with... [Lire la suite]

That's not my name...

Sorry about the last three days of silence but something crazy happened to me! Yes, again! You remember how on Wednesday I was supposed to go to school for the first time in order to attend the first of a very long series of inset days with my fellow teachers? Well, I went, and this is what happened... We all congregated in a big lecture theatre where the deputy head - the headmistress seems to be a deity who shall not be shown to mere mortals - was to make a welcome (back) speech and introduce the school to the new teachers. There... [Lire la suite]

Without you I'm nothing...

Ok, today I was on a mission - yes, another one! I really wanted to clean my flat in order to settle in properly and really feel at home. I went to the local market and bought lots of cleaning products. By twelve, there I was, scrubbing and washing. I even did my very first laundry - with my beautiful 1975 washing machine, which, by the way, shakes a lot! Nowadays, it wouldn't pass the health and safety tests, for sure. Anyway, the amazing thing was that my clothes were dry after only an hour hanging outside my window... Wow, compared... [Lire la suite]

Walk like an Egyptian...

Yes! Score! Yesterday, two - yes, TWO! - Egyptians came to me in the street and asked for directions in Arabic. Can you believe it?! I'm definitely part of this city, I look like one of them! So cool!... Well, maybe not... It might keep me safe from tourist scams though... How cynical of me! Yesterday was a good day, kind of. I didn't see Mahmoud (Aww, shame...) but I went to the British Council where - after yet another hour waiting - I was told it would take at least two weeks to get my PGCE certificate stamped...!?!?!? What do they... [Lire la suite]

Why does it always rain on me?...

Ok, I just want to cry right now! Mahmoud called me this morning (Aww, I knew he couldn't stay away for long!) and asked whether I had signed the contract for the flat I saw last night and whether I had paid the deposit. Which I both did. He then told me I shouldn't have, as he's the one arranging the contracts for foreigners and Hassan - this big fat crook! - has made me sign an Egyptian contract, which is not the same apparently, as there are some clauses which are unfair to us, poor foreigners lost in Cairo. Oh thanks for... [Lire la suite]
